University of Sunderland
In 2018, the University planned to carry out much needed upgrades within the Prospect building and Roche worked in partnership with independent consultants Hewshott International to deliver a solution within the Universities scope.
The main remit of the project was a ‘realignment’ of the Student Gateway service. The Gateway service consists of two centres, one on the city campus and the other at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peters. The Gateways provide a one stop shop for students and are effectively hubs for any information a student will need.
Two teams of engineers began the install of the interview rooms and were joined by a further two teams on the week commencing the 13th of the 8th. These teams included three platinum engineers; these are engineers with 5 years’ experience at Roche and are used on the most demanding installs. Having three platinum engineers on one site, reflected the complex nature of this project. The team’s duties were split between three main areas, the meeting rooms, interview rooms and study booths. The audio solution and the two video walls.
The screens allow the University to show live content such as BBC news as well as their own content produced by the Universities marketing team. They are hoping to roll out BT sport within the next 12 months, allowing them to double up the canteen as a sports bar and social area.
Copley Primary School
The Copley junior school is located minutes down the road from our office in Elland. In 2018 construction began on a new £8.6m site which would replace the old school building. The new school, which includes a new sports area, brings a more modern and vibrant teaching experience to children of the local area.
Copley Primary required an up-to-date technology to go with their new school, allowing them to deliver engaging lessons, and subsequently contacted Roche with their requirements. Roche Senior Accounts Manager, Stafford Lund, organised and invited some of the industry’s biggest touchscreen manufacturers to an open day. Parties from SMART, BenQ, Clevertouch and IIyama all attended, and gave demos of their product. This gave the school chance to assess the screens on offer and make an informed decision. After a successful demonstration and a period of consultation with Stafford, the school decided the Clevertouch V-Series 65” was the solution that best met their requirements.+
Installation took place during the school summer holidays, with the goal of completing the project in time for the new term in September 2018. One team of Roche engineers completed the 11 rooms across a one-week period in August, this work also incorporated the re-location of some older screens, free of charge. Another team then returned to the site a week before the new term was due to start to deal with any snagging issues and install the projector in the hall. The projector is mounted in a special cage and projects onto a 3m 16:10 electric screen. A Crestron MPC-M5 wall control unit was installed, to give staff simple control over the projectors inputs.
The installation was completed and signed off in time for the new term. Roche are proud to have delivered a high quality learning solution that will benefit the experience of children in our area. We look forward to working with Copley school again in the future.
In early 2018, the University joined the SUPC framework in order to open their options up to more Audio Visual integrators. They also had the view of finding a company they could work alongside in the long term, to ensure continuity. The tender went out in January 2018, with the requirement to upgrade 19 teaching spaces outlined. The integrator would be required design, supply, install and commission high quality AV and associated equipment
Installation began, as scheduled, on July the 2nd. One team of engineers attended the site for the first three weeks, completing installations in the Barnaby building. 18 standard rooms were installed over a six week period. Eleven of the rooms featured NEC projectors whilst two have BenQ displays. The projectors are connected to the lectern over the network, negating the use of multiple cables.
They were joined on July 30th by another team, as they moved to the Portland building. This phase of the install included a complex lecture theatre install, featuring three NEC data projectors. The Projectors, are housed in a booth at the back of the theatre, there are two viewing options, the central projector or the two either side. The projectors are capable of producing a 2 x 2.3/4m image from a throw distance of 12m.
Newcastle University Business School – Video Wall
The University required a signage upgrade in their reception area. They wanted functionality and the ability to put display varied content, as well as give students and visitors that ‘wow’ factor. Roche were contracted to carry out the work in summer 2018, having been successful with the tender application.
The Video wall was installed over a one week period in August, with two of our engineers on site. An Extron TLP pro touch panel was added for ease of use and programmed by Roche programmer Dave Evans. The panel is located behind reception and will allow the University to effortlessly switch between the inputs.
Newcastle University AV manager Andy Ramsey has this to say about the project, ‘With such a tight deadline, we have been impressed with Roche’s ability to not just meet, but exceed all our demands. They have delivered a high quality solution, that will give our students and visitors that ‘wow’ factor and allow the University to display its content in a unique, eye-catching way.’
White Rose Academies Trust
169 SMART Boards Installed Across Three Academies
The Academy initially had an enquiry for a couple of Smart interactive screens. Roche carried out a successful install of the screens in the Leeds East academy. The install was well received by the Academies and the decided they would benefit from an extensive upgrade of the establishments interactive teaching facilities across all three buildings.
Smart Touchscreens where chosen as they offer a continuation of the current technology the Trust uses and therefore the teachers were familiar with how to operate them. The 6000 series, a winner a ‘Best of BETT 2017’ teaching and learning award, offers 8-point touch capabilities, 4k Ultra HD
resolution, and smart IQ which allows for a seamless more engaging teaching experience.
Smart training sessions where carried out in early September to ensure
teachers where competent in their use. Service and support is still ongoing from Roche and SMART

A building-wide Room Booking system has Crestron touch panels located outside every room. These panels not only indicate the room availability, but also allow users to control the meeting schedule and appointments directly from the panel itself. The Installation was completed in 2017 and we are already looking at ways to integrate additional AV and enhance the systems and solutions on offer.
Emerging Technologies Lab: University of Portsmouth
Towards the end of 2017 The University of Portsmouth went out to tender for the supply and installation of an audio-visual system designed to demonstrate emerging internet technologies. The University went out to the HEPCW framework to find a competitive supplier with the skills and abilities to deliver the project.
In December 2017 Roche Audio Visual were awarded the contract to supply and install the system with a February 2018 target date for the completion of the project. The system built around Crestron’s Digital Media product range was designed to be cutting edge with the ability to manage 4K resolutions throughout.
Each of the displays built-in smart capabilities where represented on the touch screen to allow the users of the room to fully explore the technologies within the displays.
The installation team worked with the client to ensure project objectives were met and the installation completed on schedule.
Oastler Building: University of Huddersfield
Project: Teaching Spaces, Lecture Theatres and Meeting Rooms
The four theatres are located on two separate floors and sit back to back with each other, divided by a retractable wall when open turns the theatres into a large event space.
Hitachi LPWU9750 projectors were used along with JBL 65 P/T speakers.
Lecterns were built offsite by our engineers, then delivered, installed and integrated with an Extron control system at the University. The Extron control system allows for all the audio visual capabilities in the room to be controlled via the lectern.
The installation was completed in 2017 before the building was officially opened by Prince Andrew.
Federation of Abbey Academy
21 Sahara M-touch screens installed across two Academy Sites
The Academy went out to tender on the CPC framework in January 2018, with the premise of updating their current classroom systems. After assessing the tender, Stafford Lund decided that the M-Touch was the best solution for the Academy and fit all the relative criteria.
A demonstration was organised, and carried out on the 30th of January by Area Manager Anthony Christie. The screen scored highest against other competitive manufactures based on specification, application and total cost of ownership of the project. Roche provided the screens with a five year on-site warranty, Oktopus annotation software and Hitachi 120w soundbars.
Install began in early February and was carried out by Roche’s own in-house engineers. The existing equipment was removed from the site free of charge and disposed of under WEEE. After the completion of the Install on the 2nd March, a follow up training session was organised to ensure the end users got the most out of their new technology. The session was carried out by Anthony Christie on the 13th of March, with on-going support still being provided.
